Purpose of marriage in collective vs. individualistic societies
Collectivist: marriage is for the benifit of the family and community. Often organized by the parents
Individulistic: get married for love, money and looks out is often oganized by the couple
Monogamy
A marriage/relationship with one idividual alone and dedication
What is polygamy?
marriage to multiple spouses
Polygyny vs. Polyandry
Polygyny: One man to multiple women
Polyandry: One women to multiple men
Polyamory
Open Marriage
Relationship in which one has multiple partners at once (but marriage is optional)
Arranged marriage
When a marriage is agreed between guardiens and individuals.
(Both partners often have a say in wether they want to marry them, along with their parents)
Bridewealth
When the groom pays the brides family for the union between their daugther
Dowry
When the groom recieves wealth, land and or resources from the brides family during the marriage
Descent
who a person is related to
can influence duties to the family, rights and privallige
also residence, name and property
Desecent types
Bilateral Descent- equally related to both sides of fmaily
Unilineal Descent - formally related to only side
types of Unilineal Descent
Matrilineal Descent- only mother’s side as a blood relation
Patrilineal Descent- only father’s side as a blood relation
