What is marriage?
The legally or formally recognised union of two people as partners in a personal relationship.
What are first marriages?
Marriages where one or both partners had never previously been married or formed a civil partnership.
What are remarriages?
Marriages where one or both partners were previously married or had formed a civil partnership.
What is a civil partnership?
A legal relationship which can be registered by two people who are not related to each other. The rights are similar to those of marriage.
What is serial monogamy?
A trend of marriage-divorce-remarriage.
What is a civil ceremony?
A non-religious legal marriage ceremony performed by a government official or functionary.
What is secularisation?
The transformation of a society from close identification and affiliation with religious values and institutions, toward non-religious values and secular institutions.
What is stigma?
A strong feeling of disapproval that most people in a society have about something, especially when this is unfair.
