What is the definition of Divorce?
The legal dissolution of a marriage by a court or other competent body.
What is Separation?
Financial and legal affairs of the couple are separated but they remain married and are not free to re-marry.
What is Empty-shell marriages?
Where the couple continue to live under the same roof but live as separate individuals and remain married in name only.
What is Dual burden?
Where a person is responsible for two jobs, usually applied to women who are in paid work but also responsible for domestic labour.
What is a Triple shift?
When a person deals with paid work, domestic work and emotional work.
What is Emotional work?
Involves meeting the emotional demands of other people.
What is the Individualisation thesis?
The duty to remain with the same partner for life loses its hold over individuals, allowing them to pursue their own self-interest.
loses its importance —> letting people focus on what they want for themselves (FREEDOM)
What is Serial monogamy?
The fact or custom of having a number of sexual relationships one after another, but never more than one at a time.
