What is the definition of a family?
A monogamous marriage between a man and a woman, plus their child(ren), all sharing the same residence. Any set of arrangements that those involved see as a family, is a family.
What is a household?
A person living alone or a group of people living together, sharing meals, bills, housework, etc. This group may or may not be related to one another.
What is family structure?
The composition of a group of people who live together as a family unit. Structures include the nuclear family, extended family, reconstituted family, lone-parent, and same-sex families.
What is a nuclear family?
Two generations: parents and children living in the same household.
What is an extended family?
All kin (relations of blood, marriage, civil partnership or adoption) including and beyond the nuclear family.
What is a classic extended family?
An extended family sharing the same household or living near each other.
What is a modified extended family?
An extended family living apart, but keeping in touch by phone, letters, email, social media and frequent visits.
What is a beanpole family?
A multi-generation extended family, which is long and thin, with few aunts, uncles and cousins, reflecting fewer children being born in each generation, but people living longer.
What is a patriarchal family?
A family where the authority is held by males.
What is a matriarchal family?
A family where the authority is held by females.
What is a symmetrical family?
A family where authority and household tasks are shared between partners.
What is a reconstituted family or stepfamily?
One or both individuals previously married, with children from previous relationships.
What is a lone-parent family?
Lone-parents with dependent children, most commonly after divorce or separation, but it may arise from a death of a partner or an unwillingness to marry or cohabit.
What is a same-sex family?
A same-sex couple living together with their children.
What is a single person household?
An individual living alone.
