Marketisation Flashcards
Marketisation
Rooted in ideas of New Right e.g Chubb and Moe
Process where services run by the state have gov. or local authority control + support removed or reduced and operate like independently managed private businesses
Three Main Features
Independence
Competition
Choice
(+quality control)
Independence
Allowing schools (+ sixth form or further education colleges) to control own affairs- like a private business
Competition
Schools + colleges compete with each other for customers (students)
Choice
Giving customers (parents + students) a choice of schools, enables them to choose education that best suits their needs
Parentocracy
‘Parent-power’- Brown describes a parentocracy, a child’s education is dependent on wealth + wishes of parents, not ability/effort of pupils
(Parents choose private ed + better at making choices in state-funded ed)
School Diversity
Growing range of types of state-funded schools (specialist, grammar, free, foundation + trust, faith, academies etc)
Promotion of school diversity + encouraging partners to be more involved
Raising Standards
Designed to raise educational standards- parents can reject schools, competition
Schools + colleges that perform well improve more, poor performing lose money so forced to improve or close
In theory, leads to improvement of all schools, efficiency + satisfied customers
