Covert Selection Flashcards
Definition
Schools use hidden selection to cherry pick students that seem promising- social class/ability
Tough and Brooks
Backdoor social selection to pick pupils likely to be higher ability and/or from higher social classes, with well-off or well-educated parents
Green, Allen, and Jenkins
Free schools socially selective- picked bright + wealthy pupils, even schools in deprived areas failed to admit neediest children
Discouraged parents from poorer backgrounds from applying- more suited to m/c (uniform expensive, literature hard to understand, not promoted in deprived areas)
Academies Commission
Some academies holding ‘social’ events for prospective parents, or asking them to complete complicated admissions forms
Academies Commission- Quote
‘such practices enable schools to select pupil from more privileged families where parents have the requisite cultural capital to complete the [forms] in ways that will increase their child’s chances’
Faith Schools
Gained information about family circumstances from letters from spiritual leaders about religious background/commitment, so covertly select by ability/social class
London Oratory School
Forced to change admissions policy- criticised by Office of School Adjudication for complex admissions criteria- discriminated against w/c ethnic minorities, lone parents + non-religious
