Marine Provinces Flashcards
what are marine provinces
Shallowest waters right next to coasts, deepest trenches (depth)
continental margins
deep ocean basins
mid ocean ridges
Major provinces based on bathymetry
-continental margins
-deep ocean basins
-mid ocean ridges
bathymetry
measurment of depth
sonar
measures the depth of the ocean
ship bathymetry
shows depth, Not as detailed
satelite bathymetry
-much more detailed images of the seafloor, discovered a ship wreck from ww1
-shows shelves, trenches, and plate boundaries
Which type of crust is thicker?
continental crust is much thicker, has more boyancy and rides high on plates
ocean floor is thin, rides low
which type of crust is denser?
oceanic: b/c it is made of rocks that are denser (sinks)
is Ice dense?
-Ice floats low b/c it is less dense and has more volume.
-Force of gravity and force of buoyancy cancel out buoancy pushes things up
Isostasy
Crust floats in equilibrium, the mantle
equilibrium
Gravity=isostasy
