Marica's Ego Identity Statuses Flashcards
What is Marica’s Ego Identity Statuses?
This stemmed from Erikson’s Identity Development Theory, particularly stage five: identity versus identity diffusion Marcia’s four statuses look at the identity development of young adults. There are two main variables in determining what status the student falls under: exploration and commitment.
What is exploration?
involves questioning values and goals defined by parents or other authority figures and weighing various identity alternatives.
What is commitment?
refers to attaching ownership to pronounced choices, values and goals.
what is identity achievement?
Identity achievement is the healthiest psychological status.
The student has reached strong commitments in their identity formation.
Because of this strong foundation, students are able to investigate multiple alternatives and engage in risk-taking.
what is foreclosure?
Foreclosure is the stage where the student follows the rules and authorities direct their paths.
As long as the student is reluctant to go a different direction from their authority figures, this may keep them from establishing a true life purpose.
Foreclosure is the most common occurs prior to other stages
what is moratorium?
- During moratorium, students question parental values in order to establish their own identities.
- Their identity vacillates as they wrestle with resistance and conforming to authority.
- It is most engaging
what is diffusion?
Diffusion is when the student is unable or unwilling to commit, but they are also not searching.
Students go with the flow, submitting to external influences and conforming.
They are easily manipulated.
