Earls did not have to pay tax to the king on their lands in the marcher earldomes, unlike earls in true rest of England
What was rewarded to earls exempted from tax?
Loyalty was rewarded and this encourages the earls to spend it on new settlements and defences to keep them defended

Full power over law. This gave earls almost full power off the legal system and they became central figures of law meaning the could respond to disobedience very quickly.
