Stage 1: Pre industrial family
A
- family works as unit of economical production
- no seperation between work and home
- families live with/close to other family members and work together

Stage 2: The early industrial family
A
- families move to towns and cities, work seperated as men go out to work
- women preform domestic role
- extended family broken up, kinship networks remain important, women rely on female relatives
- willmott + young suggest female relatives bonded but men were excluded from home and psent time at pub instead

Stage 3: The symetrical family
A
- modern nuclear fammily has less seperation that early industrial with women both financially and domesticly contributing
- family is now a unit of consumption
- families tend to be smaller are children are dependants not financial assets
- families have become isolated from kinship ties so spend more time togeteher. Generally joint conjugal roles rather than segregated ones

Stage 4: the asymetrical family
A
- Willmott + young theorised men would increasingly spend leisure time outside the home. They conceeded this didnt occur.
- willmott + young believed in stratified difusion, they suggested cultural changes in family begin intially higher in social class
- hence why the propsed stage 4 as the wealthy had become asymetrial in family life. But there isnt much evidence that stratified diffusion occured in thsi case
