Gender roles and relationships are still unequal in society today becuase men are still dominate in terms of domestic and financial control.
Feminist
Women are often expected to unsatisfying housework. Edgell argues Women earn less and are economically dependent on their husbands therefore giving men more say in descion making.
Women are forced to cooperate with what the male partner wants and only gets to make less important decisions such as choice of home decor or chidrens clothes.

Duncombe and Marsden (1995) coined the term ‘triple shift’ which refers to when women juggle caregiving, spousal duties, and professional obligations.
The amount of overall effort contributed to the family is significanty imbalanced, women put in conjugal and caregiving effort at home whislt men conisder this as leisure time.

Willmott and Young argued that in 1973, families had become symmetrical. Rather than in traditional nuclear families where roles were segregated by gender, in modern families men and women both did paid and childcare work.

Giddens coined the term‘pure relationship’which emphasizes choice and commitment based on emotional fulfillment rather than traditional expectations.
Therefore couples in todays society negotiate roles and responsibilities based on their individual needs and preferences whereas in the past roles were more tasanactional such as that of the housewife and working husband.
