Political map
Focuses solely on the state and National boundaries of a place. They also include the locations of cities-both large and small, depending on the detail of the map.
Physical map
A physical map is one that uses colour to show the physical landscape or features of a place. Example: Rivers are shown in blue and highest lying areas are purple.
Topographic map
Similar to physical map in that it shows different features. Topographic maps use contour lines instead of colours to show changes in the height above sea level.
Orthophoto map
An aerial photo that is not distorted by the cameras tilt and has contours and some landmarks labelled.
Which direction do shadows of buildings in the Southern Hemisphere always face in orthographic maps?
Always to the south.
What can shadows of buildings be helpful in indicating in orthophoto maps?
Indicating the height of the building.
What is a contour line?
A line on a map, joining all points that are the same height above the sea level.
What is the contour interval?
The difference in height between 2 contours next to each other.
What is the name of the slope when the contour lines are close together?
Steep slope.
What is the name of the slope when the contour lines are far apart?
Gentle slope.
What is the name of the slope when the contour lines are close together at the top, and far apart at the bottom?
Concave
What is the name of the slope when the contour lines are far apart at the top and close at the bottom?
Convex slope.
How are valleys shown?
By V-shaped contours pointing to the higher ground.
