What are maps?
Tools that present information about the world in a simple visual way. (ex. location, sizes of countries, certain information such as population pattern.)
Types of maps?
We can classify maps under three broad headings:
general purpose maps
thematic maps
topographic maps
What are general purpose maps?
They provide many different types of information on one map; such as: bodies of water, roads, railway lines, parks, towns and cities. Most atlas, maps, wall maps and road maps are part of this category.
What are thematic maps?
These maps are designed to show information about one specific topic.
What are topographic maps?
They use symbols to show a variety of information. Useful if you want to examine characteristics of small areas in detail.
What is a globe?
A sphere that represents the Earth’s entire surface. It’s the most accurate representation of the Earth.
What are grids?
A series of crossing lines that create squares of rectangles.
In what direction does latitude go?
Left to right, North and South.
In what direction does longitude go?
Up and down, West to East.
What does the northern hemisphere consist of?
North west and north east.
What does the southern hemisphere consist of?
South west and south east.
What is the prime meridian?
0 degree longitude and measuring west to east. (up and down the globe)
What is the equator?
0 degrees latitude and measuring north to south. (left to right)

Below the equator is…
southern hemisphere
