Who is Cardiac Rehabilitation for?

A

Patients Recovering From:

  1. Myocardial infarction (MI)
  2. Heart surgery such as bypass, ventricular assist device (VAD), valve repair
  3. Minimally invasive procedures such as angioplasty, stenting, valve replacement
  4. Risk factors such as CAD or angina
  5. Heart Failure

What are the benefits of Cardiac Rehabilitation?

A
  1. Improve circulation
  2. Improve cholesterol profiles
  3. Improve work capacity
  4. Weight control
  5. Reduce anxiety
  6. Decrease mortality rate

What can CR not do?

A
  1. Cannot limit atherosclerotic process (goals - stabilize or reduce atherosclerosis)
  2. Cannot decrease myocardial ischemia
  3. Little effect on ejection fraction
  4. Cannot reverse effects of lung disease such as COPD

What are Indications for CR?

A

therapy follow initial acute phase, patient is relatively medically stable evidenced by

  1. Stable angina (no pain for at least 8 hours)
  2. Control of dangerous dysrhythmias (v-tach)
  3. Control of myocardial insufficiency
  4. Labs trending toward normal
  5. Compensated CHF
  6. s/p Cardiac Surgery

What are Contraindications for CR?

A
  1. Unstable angina
  2. Dangerous arrhythmias
  3. Uncompensated CHF
  4. Embolism
  5. Metabolic instability (poor diet or uncontrolled diabetes)
  6. Critical Labs
