What is the definition of a map?
A graphic representation of a portion of the earth’s surface drawn to scale, as seen from above.
Where will you find the legend of a map?
Lower left margin.
How many different colors are found on a military map?
- Black–Man made objects, surveyed spot elevations, and labels.
- Red/Brown–Cultural features, relief features, non-surveyed spot elevations, and elevation such as contour lines on a red-light readable map.
- Blue–Hydrography.
- Green–Vegetation with military significance (woods, swamps, etc.)
- Brown–Relief features, elevation, and cultivated land on red-light readable maps.
- Red–Cultural features such as populated areas, main roads, and boundaries.
How are distances always measured?
Distance is measured in a straight line. Grids are read right and up.
How close will a six digit grid be to a location?
Within 100 meters.
How close will an eight digit grid be to a location?
Within 10 meters.
How close will a four digit grid be to a location?
Within 1,000 meters.
How many norths are on a military map?
Three–True north grid north, and magnetic north.
What is an azimuth?
An azimuth is defined as a horizontal angle measured clockwise from a north base line; the azimuth is the most common military method to express direction.
What are two techniques for using the lensatic compass?
- The center hold technique.
2. The compass-to-cheeck technique.
What are the five major terrain features?
- Hill.
- Valley.
- Ridge.
- Saddle.
- Depression.
What are the three minor terrain features?
- Cliff.
- Draw.
- Spur.
What are the two supplementary terrain features?
- Cut.
