Portuguese capital. Place where Vasco da Gama departured.
Calicut
by indian ocean in india. Vasco da Gama turned this site into a trading post in 1498. The markets of Calicut offered not only pepper, gingerm cinnamon, and spices but also rubies, emeralds, gold jewelry, and fine cotton textiles. Near the tip of the subcontinent.
Goa
india. The Portuqese merchants organized trade in Indian pepper in Goa. Official capital of Portuguese colonies in Asia. (pg 376 T&E)
Hormuz
Port on an island near the choke point between the Persian Gulf and the Indian ocean. –>Vasco Da Gama and the portuguese controlled access to the Persian Gulf from Hormuz. Located closer to the Persian mainland.
Macao
(Macau?) Trading post of the Portuguese in China
Malacca (Melaka)
Principal clearinghouse of trade in the eastern Indiana Ocean. At Melaka, the Portuguese oversaw shipping between the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean. India. Conquered by a Dutch fleet in 1641
Istanbul
A.K.A. Constantinople. Found between the Sea of Maramar and the Black Sea on the eastern peninsula. Renamed Istanbul under Ottoman rule.

located in Iran(today). Made trading center by Shah Abbas (Ottoman Empire)
Potosi
Modern day Bolivia. Silver supply site for the Spanish.
Tenochtitlan
Aztec capital on an island in the middle of Lake Texcoco, central Mexico. Now known as Mexico City.
Haiti (Hispaniola)
Next to the modern-day Dominican Republic in the Caribbean.French sugar colony.
Canary Islands
Southwest of Spain, off the coast of West Africa, once home to the native Guanche people left behind as a result of earlier migrations.
Azores
Islands in the middle of the Atlantic to the west of Portugal. Uninhabited when Portuguese explorers arrived, perfect for cultivating cash crops like sugar.
Cape Verde
Islands south to Canary Islands. Fertile land and nice climate. Therefore portuguese entrepreneurs soon began to cultivate sugarcane there.
