What is the Manyoshu?
It’s a collection of 4,500 poems in 20 volumes. It was compiled during a period of great social change and is the Oldest anthology of “native” poetry in Japan

Discovery, consolidation, maturity- same as the Kojiki and Nikon Shoki
Who is Lady Nukuta?
A descendent of a previous emperor. Many of her poems attributed to Empress Saimei, indicating that she composed poems on the empress’ behalf.
Who is Kakinomoto no Hitomaro?
He served as a low-ranking courtier; his earliest datable poem is from 689. He was master of the chōka. Hitomaro’s verse is often divided into two categories: public and private poetry. He was considered the God of Poetry
