Manufacturing Processes Flashcards
What are the three stages in the manufacturing process?
To change the physical properties of the raw material
To change the shape and size of the workpiece
To achieve the required dimensional accuracy (tolerances) and surface finish
What are some (7) types of manufacturing process?
Forming
Shaping
Finishing
Casting
Additive
Joining
Wasting
What is forming? What are some examples?
Force being applied to sheet metal to change its shape
Examples are die forming, bending, rolling, spinning and extrusion
What is shaping? What are some examples?
Removing material from a workpiece to change its shape and size
Examples are cutting. milling, grinding and turning
What is finishing? What are some examples?
Altering the surface of the part to achieve a particular characteristic, i.e. improved aesthetics, solderability, chemical-resistance, etc
Examples are sanding, polishing, deburring, powder coating and etching
What is casting?
Molten liquid is poured into a mould that takes the form of the finished part which then cools and solidifies
What is additive manufacturing?
3D printing that adds materials layer by layer, rather than removing material
What are some types of additive manufacturing?
Direct metal laser sintering (DMLS)
Directed energy deposition (DED)
Selective laser sintering (SLS)
Fused deposition modelling (FDM)
Laminated object manufacturing (LOM)
Selective laser melting (SLM)
What is joining? What are the 5 examples of joints?
Assembling parts into a larger and more complex component
Butt, tee, corner, lap and edge
What is wasting? What are some examples?
Cutting away material which produces waste
Examples are guillotining, drilling, laser cutting and CNC routing
What are examples of KPIs?
DOT (Delivery On Time)
DPMO (Defect Parts per Million Opportunities)
Scrap
OEE (Overall Equipment Efficiency)
What does roughness average (Ra) measure?
The average of surface heights and depths across the surface
