Maintenance Activities Flashcards
What is maintenance?
Machines and equipment receiving appropriate care to keep them in good working order
What is maintenance that is planned? What are the two main types of planned maintenance? What is the difference between these two types?
Maintenance that is planned, documented and scheduled
PM (Planned preventative Maintenance) and Planned unscheduled maintenance
PM is done before an asset fails, whereas the other is a strategy to be done as quickly as possible when something fails
What is reactive maintenance?
Maintenance that addresses problems when they arise
What are advantages and disadvantages to planned maintenance?
Advantages: reduced maintenance costs, decreases downtime
Disadvantages: labour intensive
What are advantages and disadvantages of reactive maintenance?
Advantages: low upfront costs
Disadvantages: safety issue, time consuming
What is CBM?
Condition-Based Monitoring (CBM) is the monitoring of parameters of conditions in machinery such as vibration, temperature or noise to identify a significant change
What are advantages and disadvantages of CBM?
Advantages: improves safety, minimises unscheduled downtime due to catastrophic failure
Disadvantages: Fatigue/general wear failures not detected, equipment for CBM is expensive
What is MRO?
Maintenance, Repair and Operations (MRO) is concerned with the equipment, tools and activities used daily in a business
What can MRO be? What are some examples of equipment MRO applies to?
Routine, predictive or corrective
CNC machinery, facility lighting, hand tools, PPE, etc.
What is operations monitoring?
Observing performance of a machine/equipment over time by collecting key system performance metrics at planned intervals
What are some key system performance metrics that could be collected to perform operations monitoring?
Downtime and utilisation
Operator effectiveness
Energy use
Right part first time (scrap)
What is shutdown maintenance?
Maintenance performed on machines that can only be done when they are not in use
What is servicing?
What is done ((bi-)annually) to ensure machinery is operating as productively and safely as possible
What is commissioning?
Assuring all systems/components of a site are installed, tested, operated, etc. according to the operational requirements of the owner/final client
What is decommissioning?
Removing something from active service to put into storage, repurpose or dispose of
