Approaches to Design Flashcards
What are the 5 stages of the design process?
- Empathise
- Define
- Ideate
- Prototype
- Test
(this list is not extensive)
What is UCD? What does it mean?
User Centred Design
A form of iterative design that focuses on users and their needs
What is inclusive design?
Design that makes the product usable to as many people as possible
What is iterative design?
An approach to continually improve and refine a design/product
What are factors in ergonomic design?
Posture
Clearance
Strength
What is DFM?
Design For Manufacturing (DFM) is the designing of products that are easy to manufacture
What are the DFM principles?
Process (should be low cost and efficient)
Design (drawings should conform to accepted standard)
Materials (must be easy to source and use)
Environment (need to be designed so materials can perform in conditions of use)
Compliance (must pass testing)
What is DFA?
Design For Assembly (DFA) focuses on the ease of assembly
What are the DFA priciples?
Few parts = less time = less costs
Few parts = reduced material costs
Features making the part easier to handle = reduced assembly time and costs
What is sustainable design?
Designing products to comply with the protection of the environment
What are the sustainable design principles?
Reduce consumption of non-renewable resources
Reduce carbon
Minimise waste
Create healthy, productive environments
Consider entire product life cycle
What are the six Rs of sustainability?
Reduce
Refuse
Rethink
Repair
Reuse
Recycle
What is research methodology? What are the three types?
How a given piece of research is carries out
Qualitative (text), quantitative (numbers) and mixed-methods (both)
What are testing methodologies? What are the three types?
Strategies/approaches to test a product to ensure it is fit for purpose
Temperature and pressure, fatigue and fastener stress testing (how bolts/connectors perform under stress)
