What are manufactured boards
Made by cutting solid timbre and sticking it back together in a different way. It is a good way of making large flat boards
What is the problem with large boards cut directly from a tree trunk
They will not stay flat
What is plywood
Made by sticking many thin layers of veneers, each layer has its grain opposite direction to the ones next to it. This helps keep the boards flat
What is blackboard & what is it used for
It is used by gluing multiple strips of softwood side by side and then sticking a thin veneer on each side. It is made in thickness from 12mm and is very strong. Blackboard is often used for modern furniture, frequently with decorative veneer on the surface
What is chipboard
Is made by gluing thousands of bits of wood together it is not very strong and is difficult to join. The advantage is it is cheap and is often used with facing veneers for modern furniture such as kitchen furniture
What is hardboard
Made by gluing and compressing thousands of pulped wood. one side is rough one side is smooth. Comes as thinks sheet used to cover large areas cheaply such as cupboard backs it is not very strong
What is MDF (stands for what)
Medium Density Fibreboard
Giving compressions very small pieces of wood together
