Manual and Data Processing Flashcards
Accessibility devices
Some peripheral devices are specifically created to allow accessibility for people with disabilities
Examples of Accessibility devices
- Trackball
- Touch screen or large keyboard
- Eye motion sensors and head motion sensors
- Braille embosser
- Foot mouse
Trackball
An easier-to-use alternative to a mouse, consisting of a moveable ball on a base
Touch screen or large keyboard
The screens are sensitive to pressure, a user interacts with the computer by touching pictures or words on the screen
Eye motion sensors and head motion sensors
Eye motion trackers track the movement of the eye
Head motion trackers are used in the same way but track movement of the whole head
Braille embosser
A type of printer that allows the user to output embossed braille cells. Can be read by people who are blind and can read braille
Foot mouse
Specifically designed for people who have limited mobility in their arms
Manual Data Processing
When data is processed by a human. This includes storing, manipulating, preparing and distributing data.
Automatic Data Processing
When a digital device automatically processes the data
Manual Data Processing methods
- Keying client or product details into a database
- Entering customer’s meal choices into a restaurant’s system
- Marking exam papers and entering results manually into a spreadsheet
Automatic Data Processing/Devices
- Biometric reader
- Barcode readers
- Smart meters
- OMR (Optical mark reader)
- RFID (Radio Frequency Identification)
Biometric Readers
Scanners that read fingerprints, and handprints or irises for use in personnel identification systems
Barcode Readers
Used to automatically find a product information using the barcode on a product. Lines of different thickness and converted into a string of values
Smart meters
Accurately records electricity and gas usage and send readings to the energy supplier
OMR Optical Mark Reader
Readers automatically read a form and input data. Example lottery ticket
RFID Radio Frequency Identification
Uses radio frequency to transfer data. This has recently been added to credit card and debit cards to make contactless payments
Manual Advantages
- Can handle any type of data
- Requires limited training
- Usually costs less to have data entered manually
Automatic Advantages
- Less likely to have errors
- Quicker at entering data
- Allows one person to perform lots of jobs at the same time
Manual Disadvantages
-Takes more time than AP and mistakes can be made such as transcription errors
Automatic Disadvantages
- Higher capital cost- Much bigger investment
- More maintenance required- Includes much more machinery and require more time and money dedicated to maintenance and repairs
