Computer Misuse Act (1990)
Protects users against the theft and damage of the information they store. There are different punishments depending on the crime, but could be as much as 10 years in jail/ and or a large fine
Police and Justice Act 2006
Extension of the Computer Misuse Act so that is covers Denial of Service Attacks. A DoS aims to disrupt an IT system e.g web server and prevent user access. The maximum sentence for a Dos attack is 10 years in prison
Data Protection Act 1998
Protects the privacy of individuals by ensuring that their personal information is processed in an ethical manner. There are 8 principles that must be complied with. If in a breach of the DPA then an organisation can be fined as much as £500,000
Copyright, Designs & Patents Act
Protects the rights of creators of the original work (e.g music, video and books). This prevents others distributing this work without the copyright holders permission. Breach of act incurs in penalties of up to 10 years imprisonment and unlimited fines
Copyright (Computer Programs) Regulations 1992
Extension of Copyright, Designs & Patents Act to ensure computer programs are covered under copyright
Health and Safety (Display Equipment) 1992
These regulations require organisations to make sure that display equipment, e.g computer monitors, meet health and safety standards. Failure to comply with these regulations is normally punished through a fine
Consumer Right Act 2015
This covers consumer rights regarding goods and services including digital content. Consumers have the right to repair, replacement or refund for faulty digital content
