In 2006, the EC adopted a new directive that calls for stricter standards and reduces the amount of lab tests done in routine beach monitoring from 19 to 2 namely Escherichia coil and intestinal enterococci. This replaces policies in thr EC bathing water directive that have existed since 1976.

Marked improvement over the past 20 years. But yet to be in agreement with 2006 EC Directice. Further sewage works and pollution control measures are needed. The new Protocols are ambitious and require significant changes in practice - they are in accordance with WHO guidelines
