Mangroves Flashcards

1
Q

Characteristics of mangroves

A
  • tropical trees & scrubs which grow in the intertidal zone, sheltered areas
  • They grow closely together in shallow, muddy water. They have aerial roots & shiny waxy leaves.

Q

adaptations of mangroves are to:

A
  • prevent salt intrusion
  • ensure a stable platform
  • allow seeds to spread out
  • absorb gases from atmosphere and minerals from mud
  • reduce evapotranspiration
  • breath

ensure a stable platform

A

cable roots are spread out from trunk to ensure a stable platform

6
Q

allow seeds to spread out

A

seeds float so that they are able to spread out and float away from parent plant tree and increase chance of survival

Q

absorb gases from atmosphere and minerals from mud

A

Pneumatophores enable them to absorb gases from atmosphere and minerals from mud when soil is watterlogged with little oxygen

9
Q

breath

A

pneumatophores are roots which stick out of the water like straws for breathing

Q

stilt roots

A

prop themselves above the water level with stilt roots, so that they can absorb air through pores in their bark called lenticels.

16
Q

waterfiltration

A

They can filter pollutants out of the water. They also trap sediment preventing it from affecting offshore reefs

17
Q

location of mangroves

A

Inter-tidal zones along sheltered coastlines & estuaries that experience tropical & subtropical climates, mainly between 30 degrees N & S of the Equator.

18
Q

conditions required for mangroves

A

temperature - 20°C or above
temperature range - less than 5°C
location - freshwater swamps even though adapted to live in saltwater
tidal fluctuations - reduces competition from other plant species
tides - help mangroves extend further inland, supply nutrients, remove waste products, transport mangrove seeds
conditions - humid climate, saline enviroment, waterlogged soil
