Q

Chandelles

a. Overview
b. Setup
c. Execution

A

a. Max performance 180 degree climbing turn
b. CRAAC - Clearing turns - Reference point off wing - Altitude no lower than 1500 AGL - Airspeed: start @ 100 KIAS, end just above stall (50-55 KIAS) - clean Configuration
c. Full power - establish a 30 degree bank and gradually pitch up 10-12 degrees first 90 degrees of turn - gradually decrease bank to level with constant 10-12 pitch up - at 180 degree point: level flight just above stall - increase airspeed maintaining straight and level - cruise checklist

Q

Lazy Eights

a. Overview
b. Setup
c. Execution

A

a. A pair of 180 degree turns - first 90 degrees of each - increasing bank and altitude, second 90 degrees of each - decreasing bank and altitude
b. CRAAC - Clearing turns - Reference point off wing - altitude no lower than 1500 AGL - Airspeed: 100 KIAS to 5-10 knots above stall at 90 degree points (55-60 KIAS) - clean Configuration
c. Slowly increase pitch and bank - At 45 degree point: 15 degree pitch up and 15 degree bank - reduce pitch, increase bank - At 90 degree point: level pitch, 30 degree bank - reduce pitch, reduce bank - At 135 degree point: 15 degree pitch down and 15 degree bank - At 180 degree point: level pitch, entry altitude and airspeed - repeat in opposite direction - cruise checklist

Q

Eights on Pylons

a. Overview
b. Setup
c. Execution

A

a. Figure eight pattern flown around 2 ground reference points, such that the line of sight from the pilot’s eyes parallel to the plane’s lateral axis, remains fixed on the pylon. Must be flown at pivotal altitude (groundspeed squared / 11.3).
b. CRAAC - Clearing turns - first point visible - 1000 AGL - Airspeed: 100 KIAS - clean Configuration - on a heading in which the wind is from the right
c. When abeam the first point, count 15-25 sec, identifies second point - 225 degree right teardrop turn to split the 2 points evenly on a 45 degree downwind entry - make minor adjustments to groundspeed and establish pivotal altitude before splitting pylons - begin left turn around first point - make adjustments to compensate for changes in groundspeed and maintain line of sight reference with the pylon (descend if point moves forward and climb if point moves back) - begin to rollout to split the 2 points evenly at a 45 degree angle - 3-5 sec straight and level - complete the turn around the second point in the opposite direction - exit on the entry heading - cruise checklist

Q

Steep Spirals

a. Overview
b. Setup
c. Execution

A

a. Series of constant radius gliding turns around a ground reference point
b. CRAAC - clearing turns - point visible - an Altitude that allows at least 3 spirals to be complete no lower than 1500ft AGL (Usually at least 3000 AGL) - 90 KIAS, maintaining altitude - clean Configuration
c. Enter with headwind - throttle idle - at least 3 constant radius spirals maintaining constant airspeed (bank no more than 60 degrees) - clear engine once every 360 degree turn - rollout on specified heading - cruise checklist

Q

Accelerated Stall

a. Overview
b. Setup
c. Execution

A

a. Consists of a stall from a steep turn
b. CRAAC - clearing turns - reference point/heading - altitude in which maneuver can be completed no lower than 3000 AGL - Airspeed: 80 KIAS - clean Configuration
c. Establish a 45 degree turn - slowly reduce power to idle - increase elevator back pressure to maintain altitude and induce stall - recover at first indication of stall (reduce AOA, level wings, full power) - return to specified heading, airspeed and altitude - cruise checklist
