Mandible Flashcards
Corpus
The body, this is the thick boney part of the mandible that anchors the teeth. It’s very hard, dense and resistant ti destruction.
Ascending Ramus
This is considerably thinner than the body. This vertical part of the mandible rises above the level of the teeth and articulates with the cranial base.
Mandibular Condyle
The large, rounded, articular prominence on the posterosuperior corner of the ramus. It articulates with the temporomandibular joint.
Condylar Neck
This is the area just anteroinferior to the condyle.
Mandibular Notch
This is the notch between the condylar and the coronoid process.
Coronoid Process
Coronoid process of the ramus is thin and triangular, varying widely in shape and robusticity. Its anterior boarder is thickened and convex, and its posterior edge is concave and thinner.
Oblique Line
This is a weak eminence that passes from the root of the ramus to the area at the rear of the mental foramen.
Alveolar Margin
This margin on the corpus contains the alveoli for the tooth roots except where these have been reabsorbed following tooth loss.
Extramolar Sulcus
This is the gutter between the root of the anterior edge of the ramus and the lateral alveolar margin of the last molar.
Mandibular Foramen
This enters the bone obliquely, centred in the medial surface of the ramus. It’s on the posterior of the ramus.
Gonial or Mandibular Angle
This is the rounded posteroinferior corner of the mandible.
Mandibular Symphysis
This technically refers only to the midline surfaces of unfused left and right mandibular halves in individuals less than 1 year of age. Although it is generally used to refer to the anterior region of the mandible between the canines.
Mental Protubulance
This is the triangular eminence or boney chin, at the base of the corpus in the anterior symphyseal region.
Mental Foramen
This is the large, sometimes multiple foramen located on the lateral corpus surface, near mid corpus, below the premolar region.
Mental Spines
These lie near the inferior margin of the inner (posterior) surface of the anterior corpus and they are variable in prominence.
