Managment strategies relating to impacts of coastal processes on human acitivty Flashcards
What is the process of management via doing nothing
Allows natural processes such as coastal erosion to continue
What is the process of management via managed retreat or realignment
Allows shoreline to move inland via erosion or flooding to a new line of defence
What is the process of management via Hold the line
The present shoreline is protected by a variety of hard and soft engineering solutions
What is the process of management via Advance the line
The shoreline is moved seawards either using hard engineering structures or by encouraging sand dune growth
What is the process of management via limited intervention
Deals with the problem to an extent for example encouraging growth of salt marsh or sand dunes to reduce impact or raising buildings to cope with flooding due to rising sea levels
What are the 4 dependencies on choosing a management strategy
Feasibility
Cost-benefit analysis (CBA)
Environmental impact analysis (EIA
Risk assessment
What is Feasibility
Technical aspects considered e.g is a engineering solution possible giving the marine processes and factors like geology
What is Cost-benefit analysis (CBA)
Divides the value of benefits by costs. Benefits should outweigh the costs for adoption of strategy
What is Environmental impact analysis (EIA)
Considers effects on the environment such as changes to sediment flows
What is a risk assessment
Considers factors like recurrence intervals of storms and what strategy is designed to prevent, how long it should last. This is weighed against value of what is at risk such as people and property.
What is managed retreat
Existing coastal defences are abandoned allowing sea to flood inland till it reaches higher land or a new ling of defence it may allow development of salt marshes.
