Headlands and bays + Cave arch slump stack sequence Flashcards
What are the 2 types of coast?
Discordant and Concordant
What is a concordant coast
Concordant coastline occurs where beds, or layers, of differing rock types are folded into ridges that run parallel to the coast. The outer hard rock provides a protective barrier to erosion of the softer rocks further inland
What is a discordant coast
A discordant coastline occurs where bands of different rock type run perpendicular to the coast. The differing resistance to erosion leads to the formation of headlands and bays
Cave, arch, stack, stump sequence step 1
Marine erosion processes create sea caves along a line of weakness
Cave, arch, stack, stump sequence step 2
Further erosion results in caves either sides of a small headland which eventually meet to form an arch.
Cave, arch, stack, stump sequence step 3
Overtime the arch becomes unstable and collapses leaving an isolated pillar of rock (A stack)
Cave, arch, stack, stump sequence step 4
Erosion processes attack the stack causing it to collapse, leaving a short section (A stump)
