Coastal deposition Flashcards
When does deposition occur?
Deposition occurs when the energy of the sea is too low to transport material.
When does a wave loose the energy to carry sediment?
When the wave looses velocity from breaking
When backwash percolates quickly into the beach
As a result of flocculation
What is flocculation
Flocculation refers to a process by which a solute comes out of a solution. As the sediment is dropped the charged particles, such as clays and polymers, clumps together to form flocs.
Where is large sediment deposited?
Larger sediment is deposited furthest from the sea by high-energy waves such as in a storm creating a steep beach of larger material (A storm beach)
Where is smaller sediment deposited?
Deposited nearer to the sea than larger sediments
What is material near the sea more prone to?
Attrition and being eroded into smaller particles
