What things are important to take into consideration when thinking of patient expectations?
Look at the casts
- Is there an atrophic ridge that will be uncomfortable for the patient and cause poor retention?
- Are there prominent muscle attachments that will dislodge the denture on function?
- Can you see the lingual pouches?
- Are there prominent dental and soft tissue undercuts?
- Flabby ridges.
- Tori.
How can you manage patient expectations from the beginning?
Outline that dentures will never be as good as natural teeth.
- appearance, function, feeling, speech, comfort.
What questions can you ask to gauge how well a patient will cope with dentures?
How long ago did you lose your teeth?
How many dentures have you had?
How long have you had your current dentures for?
Are you currently wearing the last denture that was made for you?
