Communication-Oriented Treatments
Strongly dependant on:
- Degree of disability or handicap
- Accompanying deficits
- Environmental factors (inc communication partners)
Communication-Oriented Treatments: Speaker Strategies best for:
Moderate to severe dysarthria but NO language or cognitive component
Speaker Strategies:
Prepare listener w/ alerting signals
Convey how communication should occur (esp when using AAC)
Set the context and ID the topic
Modifying sentence content, structure & length
Gestures
Comprehension checks
Alphabet board if needed
Listener Strategies:
Maintain eye contact Active listening (verify, signal when breakdown) Modify environment
Interaction Strategies:
Avoid times of stress/fatigue when important conversations
