Inequality in local funding
the inequality across the country in school funding. Some schools receive a much larger amount of money because the taxes are higher, property is worth more, or salaries are greater.
Inequality in State Funding
Some states send a large amount of state revenue to the individual school districts and some send almost nothing. Depending on the political climate of the state, each might give drastically different amounts to the schools.
School Vouchers
Some states allow residents to use the amount of money it would cost a student to attend their local public school towards a private school. This takes away money from the local district and reduces the student population.
Two Distinctive types of Public Schools
- Traditional Public Schools
- Charter Schools
charter school
is a school that receives state funding from the same sources as a traditional public school, but operates as an independent school. have to follow an agreement between the school and the state to uphold academic standards. These schools that don’t meet the agreements can be shut down.
Charter vs Public differences in operations and curriculum
charter schools are independently run, they do not have to follow the state curriculum. The school can choose the programs they want to teach as long as it meets with their agreement.
Additionally, charter schools operate through the use of their own Charter Board
