Management styles refer to the behaviour and attitude of the manager when making decisions, directing and motivating staff and when implementing plans to achieve business objectives

Autocratic Management: Definition, Advantages and Disadvantages, features

A

Def: An autocratic management style is one where the manager tells staff what decisions have been made.

Ad: effective in times of crisis, very effective and fast, when employees lack skills and knowledge, directions and procedures are clearly defined.

Dis: No employee input is allowed so employee ideas are not encouraged, no responsibility is given to lower staff therefore staff satisfaction decreases, the potential for conflict, potential for feat among the employees.

Feat: The managers make all the decisions and tell the employees, effective in times of crisis, managers expect compliance and obedience, communication is one way

Persuasive Management style: Definition, Advantages, Disadvantages, features

A

Def: A Persuasive management style is one where the manager attempts to sell decisions to the employees.

Ad: Managers can gain trust and support, workers feel that their feelings and opinions are considered, Instructions are clear and constant, there is some acceptance of negative situations regarding employees.

Dis: Employees fail to give full support to management, Communication is poor and limited, employees may remain frustrated for they are denied full participation in the decision making process.

feat: authority and control are centralised with senior management, but managers attempt to make employees accept the objectives of the business and work to certain plans and procedures. communication is one way.

Consultative Management Style: Definition, Advantages, Disadvantages, features

A

Def: Consultative management style is where the manager consults employees before making decisions

Ad: allows a greater variety of ideas, increased levels of motivation and commitment due to employees feeling a sense of ownership in the management

Dis: time consuming, some issues are not suitable for wide range discussion, some ideas are bound to get ignored causing conflict

Feat: consulting employees before making decisions, seeks opinions of employees, the manager makes the final decision, two way communication

Participative management style: Definition, Advantages, Disadvantages, features

A

Def: Participative management style is where the manager unites with the employees to make decisions together.

Ad: increases positive employer/ employee relationships. increased motivation and job satisfaction, employees have more opportunity to gain new skills

Dis: time consuming, role of manager is weakened, internal conflict may arise through different views and opinion.

feat: most effective when business is operating in an environment undergoing rapid change. employees accept responsibility and can implement changes. business is more responsive to change.

Laissez-Faire Management Style: Advantages, Disadvantages, features

Def: Lassire- faire is the one where the employees assume all responsibility for, control of a, workplace operations

Ad: communication is completely open, encourages creativity, promotes outstanding results from employees feel a sense of ownership of the business.

Dis: complete loss of control of management, personal conflicts can arise, focus on business objectives can be eroded.

feat: effective for creative work or research with employees who are highly talented or qualified in the tasks performed with minimum supervision
