Management of TMD Flashcards
Treatment modalities
Conservative
Nonconservative Treatment
what is Conservative treatment
Reversible, not surgical treatment
what is nonconservative treatment
Irreversible, surgical treatment
What is definitive treatment
Doing something by directly eliminating and altering the cause of the dissorder and consequences
what is supportive therapy
Treat symptoms instead of the disease and dissorder with no effect on the cause of the disorder
what are some types of supportive therapy
Pharmacologic Therapy
Physical Therapy
Analgesics
Aspirin
Anti-inflammatory drugs
Ibuprofen
Muscle relaxants
Soma
Anxiolytic agents
Valium
Antidepressants
Prozac
Anticonvulsant medications
Lyrica

what is an occlusal appliance (splint)
A removable device that fits over the occlusal and incisla surface of the teeeth of one arch
what is an occlusal appliance made of
Usually of hard acrylic
what does an occlusal appliance do
Create positive occlusal contact with the teeth in the opposing arch
Types of Occlusal appliances
Bite guard
Night guard
Interocclusal appliance
Orthopedic device
How does Root reabsorption occur
Occures from inside to the outside
what is more important, good bone or good teeth
Good bone, because we can allways place and implant, and bone building is very tough
Uses of Occlusal appliance
Temporarily proves a more ortho-pedically stable joint position
Introduce an optimum functional occlusal that reorganizes the neuro-muscular reflex activity
Protect teeth and supportive structures from abnormal forces that may create breakdown or occlusal wear
How well do Occlusal appliance therapy reduce TMD symptoms
70-90% of TMD symtpoms
what do occlusal appliances reduce
Reduce PArafunctional muscle activity, hence myogenous pain
reduce forces placed on the TMJs and other strucutres within the masticatory system
what causes the symptoms of the TMJ to decrease
Unloading of the masticatory system
what kind of pain do occlusal appliances not reduce
Myogenic pain, not arthritic pain
