What are the effects of obesity on the body?
Increasing BMI has a strong correlation with type 2 diabetes
What is the effect of patients with type 2 diabetes losing weight?
Improves insulin sensitivity and glycaemic control
How do you measure insulin sensitivity?
Fasting plasma insulin concentration
Lower insulin means higher sensitivity
What percent of scotlands population is overweight? Obese?
Overweight: 38%
Obese: 22%
Overview of management
Even when people engage in an exercise programme but do not lose weight, what can be a positive outcome?
Patients may reduce their waist circumference - this reduction in visceral fat will help improve insulin sensitivty
What are the bariatric surgeries used?
Gastric band
Roux - en - Y bypass
