Management of cysts Flashcards
Cyst definition
Pathologic cavity lined by epithelium. Contains fluid/semi fluid/gaseous substance, not created by accumulation of pus
Behaviour of ranula
Formed under tongue or on floor of mouth
Rupture spontaneously but recurrence high du to blocked duct
Lateral periodontal cyst is associated with vital/non vital tooth
Vital tooth
Ddx for radicular cyst
Ant: PCOD
Post: Traumatic bone cyst
How to describe a cyst
Size Colour Overlying mucosa Well circumscribed Location Tender on palpation Fluctuant
Surgical methods to manage cysts
- Marsupialisation
- Surgical enucleation
- Resction
What is marsupialisation
Remove roof of cyst to empty contents. Stitch mucosal lining with mucosal layer to prevent collapse
(Recurrence possible, would need to remove entire gland)
What is enucleation
Entire removal of tumour/structure without rupture; remove cystic lining below it
Factors determining recurrence of cyst
Ability to remove cyst completely
Proliferation ability of cysts
Factors determining treatment choice for cyst
Recurrence of cyst Size Location (ability to reconstruct) Age (young patient avoid extensive reconstruction) Syndromic?
