Autocratic
Total authority and control over decision making - they will control employees and monitor them.
Often found in construction, manufacturing and the military
Democratic
Encourages freedom and discussion - they are often dynamic leaders and can operate in rapidly changing business environments
Often found in the creative industries: advertising, design etc.
Paternalistic
Acts as the father figure and takes care of their employees’ needs - they expect employees to trust them and to follow their instructions. The bond between employees and the leader is very strong
E.g. the owner of a small family run business
Laissez-faire
Allows things to take their own course without interference - they give employees an opportunity to take responsibility and instead focus on motivating and providing a sense of direction.
Often found in industries where the employees are experienced, highly skilled or well educated, E.g. experienced sales teams, car or machine repairs
Transactional
States the goals and objectives from which activities are then organised
Employees carry out activities in exchange for rewards, E.g. for pay and performance
Example: Lord Alan Sugar
Transformational
Focuses on the hearts and minds of employees
They aim to give them satisfaction, motivation and achievement. The leader shows trust rather than trying to take control, by empowering employees to do the job themselves.
Example: Steve Jobs (Apple)
Charismatic
Tends to have commitment, passion and the ability to hold on to their beliefs. They are persuasive and appealing and are able to use their skills to to get people on their side. They are usually confident, optimistic and good speakers.
Example: Sir Richard Branson
