Mammals As A Consumer- Digestion parts Flashcards
What is chemical digestion
Where large molecules re broken down into smaller molecules by enzymes.
What is peristalsis
Food is rolled in a ball swallowed. It passes down the oesophagus. This is called peristalsis the. Useless contraction.
What acid is found in the stomach
Hydrochloric acid
Why is Hydrochloric acid in the stomach
Kills micro- organisms, helps break up some foods and provides optimum conditions for stomach enzymes
What liquid does the food become in the stomach
The muscles in the stomach wall contract to mix the food and it becomes a liquid called chyme
What enzyme breaks down proteins
Pepsin
What liquid is released at start of duodenum
Chyme
Where is bile made and what is it used for
Where bile is made in the liver and stored in gall bladder this is released in duodenum where it neutralises the acid from the stomach. Bile also breaks fat into small droplets so that the fat can be digested by the enzyme lipase
What is the villi for
To increase the surface area for absorption, it is found in the ileum
What is inside the villi
Micro villi line the villi wall to furthermore increase the surface area got absorption. The blood capillary is there to hold the food and digest amino acids and glucose. The lacteal is there to absorb fatty acids and glycerol
Assimilation
Assimilation occurs when food substances, absorbed from the digestive system, becomes part living tissue.during absorption small molecules move from digestive system to circulatory system. During assimilation the small molecules move into the body cells where they build new organic molecules
What is physical digestion
The breakdown of large molecules to small molecules using mastication ( chewing)
