- atony - if treated with too much syntocinon

- cervical dilation depends on force of contractions and pressure from foetal head
- vaginal canal needs to be overcome may require episiotomy

- lie of bab - longitudinal good, transverse or oblique bad
- presentation - which way are they facing - head first good, brow and face = greatest diameter

How may you encourage cervical ripening?
A
- prostaglandins
- oxytocin

What do you do if a women is not progressively dilating but is at 5cm?
A
- AROM
- wait 2 hours to see if that increases dilation
- if not - IV oxytocin
- if still not at 12-16 hours or bad CTG or placental abruption - C-section
