What’s PID?
A
Inflammatory disease of the organs of the female reproductive system. Usually a result of an ascending infection from the endocervix.

What organism do you have to cover for when suspecting PID?
A
- Nisseria gonorrhoea and chlamydia trachomatis
- mycoplasma (genitalium + hominis)

How does PID present?
A
- lower abdomen pain
- deep dyspareunia
- fever
- abnormal vaginal discharge
- dysuria
- menstrual irregularities
- cervical excitation
- post insert of IUS or IUD

Q
How do you investigate and subsequently treat PID?
A
- urine beta-HCG - rule out ectopic
- high vaginal swabs (thrush, vaginosis, trachomonas)
- gonorrhoea and chlamydia screen
-IM ceftriaxone + oral doxy + oral metronidazole for 14 days
