Male reproductive tract Flashcards
Where do the seminiferous tubules develop from?
The testes cords
What do the seminiferous tubules do?
Form gametes
What does the ductus (vas) deferens do?
Carry ejaculatory sperm out of the epididymus
What are the acessory gland?
Prostaste
Bulbo-urethral gland
Seminal vesicles
What ejaculate component come from the bulbo-urethral gland?
- Colourless
- Pre-ejaculate
What does the ejaculate from the prostate contain?
Acid phosphate, which is a marker of prostate function and an increase can indicate prostate cancer
What ejaculate component come from the seminal vesicles?
1) Fructose
2) High K+
3) Prostaglandins
What is the tunica vaginalis?
Thick layer of connective tissue which lines the scrotal cavity, preventing friction
What is the tunica albuginea?
Dense layer of connective tissue which is continuous with the fibres surrounding the epididymis
What is the epididimis?
Stores sperm
Duct behind the testes
What are the rete testes?
Collect sperm from the seminiferous tubules
In the centre of the testes
What are septa?
Connective tissue which separates seminiferous tubules into lobules
What do the seminiferous tubules contain?
Seminiferous epithelium surrounded by myoid cells
What do myoid cells do?
Propel non-motile cells to move them out of the seminiferous tubules by hydrostatic pressure
What are leydig cells?
Cells in the interstitial tissues (between the seminiferous tubules) which produce testosterone under the influence of lutenizing hormone
- Have lots of microvili and SER
