Male reproductive system part 1 and 2 notes Flashcards
What is the function of the reproduction systems?
both in male and female is to produce offspring
What is the main role of the male reproductive system?
to make sperm and deliver them to the female reproductive tract
What is the main role of the female reproductive system?
produce female gametes (eggs or ova)
What are gonads and what are they in males and females?
primary sex organs. Males is testes and ovaries in females
What do gonads produce and what are they for males and females?
Produce gametes and sperm for males and ova (eggs) for females
What it the Tunica albuginea?
fibrous connective tissue that surrounds each testis
What is the Septa?
extensions of the tunica albuginea that extend into the testis and divide it into a large number of lobules
What is the main purpose of the testes?
make sperm via meiosis and also produce testosterone.
What does each lobule contain?
seminiferious tubules
What are seminiferous tubules?
sperm forming factories
What are interstitial cells and what do they produce?
soft CT surrounding the seminiferous vesicles and they produce testosterone
What does the male duct system contain?
epididymis, ductus deferens, urethra
What is the epididymis?
temporary storage site for the immature sperm that enter it from the testis
What is the ductus deferens or van deferens?
rums upward from the epididymis through the inguinal canal into the pelvic cavity and arches over the superior aspeect of the bladder
What is the CT called that encloses the van deferens?
spermatic cord
What is the end of the ductus deferens?
ejaculatory duct
What is the main purpose of the vas deferens?
propel live sperm from their storage sites to the ejaculatory duct and into the urethra
What is a vasectomy?
cutting of the ductus deferens at the level of the testes to prevent transportation of sperm
What is the urethra?
extends from the base of the urinary bladder to the tip of the penis (carries both sperm and urine)
Prostatic urethra-
surrounded by the prostate gland
membranous urethra
spans the distance from the prostatic urethra to the penis
spongy (penile) urethra
runs within the length of the penis
What are the male accessory organs?
Paired seminal vesicles, prostate gland, bulbourethral glands
What are seminal vesciles located and how much of the semen do they produce?
located at the base of the bladder and produce about 60% of semen that is thick and yellowish
