Male Reproductive System Flashcards
- *Seminiferous tubule** – exocrine component of testis (spermatogenesis - production of sperm).
- *Interstitium** – endocrine component (synthesis of testosteron).
Interstitium consists of:
- *Loose connective tissue** (fibroblasts, macrophages, collagen fibers, blood vessels, nerves)
- *Leydig cells** (synthesis of testosterone)
Seminiferous epithelium:
Spermatogonia – relatively small cells, condensed chromatin, rest on the basal lamina
Spermatocytes – the biggest cells of seminiferous epithelium, big granulated nucleus
Spermatids – small cells with dark heterochromatin
Mature sperm – head, neck, tail (spermatids differentiate into mature sperm by
process of spermiogenesis)
Sertoli cells (sustentacular cells) – cylindrical or pyramid shaped cells,
extend from basal lamina to lumen of seminiferous tubule.
The Certoli cell-to-Certoli cell junctional complex between spermatogonia
and spermatocytes is the site of the blood-testis barrier.
Mucosa:
Lamina epithelialis mucosa – pseudostratified columnar epithelium
Lamina propria mucosa – scarce fibroblasts and collagen fibers
Smooth muscle - myocytes
Adventitia – irregular dense connective tissue, blood vessels, nerves
Mucosa:
Lamina epithelialis mucosa – pseudostratified columnar epithelium
Lamina propria mucosa – loose connective tissue with big amount of elastic fibers
Smooth muscle – three layers of myocytes
Adventitia – loose connective tissue, blood vessels, nerves
Proximal part of ductus deferens is thicker than distal part (ampulla of ductus
deferens that is joined by the duct of seminal vesicle)
Mucosa:
- *Lamina epithelialis mucosa** – cuboidal epithelium (viscous alkaline secretion with fructose is secreted – energy for mature sperm motility)
- *Lamina propria mucosa** – loose connective tissue
- *Smooth muscle** – thick wall made of myocytes
- *Adventitia** – loose connective tissue, blood vessels, nerves
