Q

  • Discoid in shape, about 20 cm in diameter
  • It consists of the fetal and the maternal part
  • The fragment of the fetal part that faces the fetus is smooth and consists of the chorionic plate (cannot be seen in this specimen)

Q

Between the chorionic villi is the intervillous space in which the mother’s blood is circulating.
Through this blood, oxygen, nutrients, hormones, antibodi and vitamins are delivered to the fetus through the chorionic villi.

Q
A

The inner surfaces of the chorionic plate, chorionic villi and decidua are lined with a special cuboidal epithelium - trophoblast.
In the chorionic villi there is a stroma of the chorionic villi (loose connective tissue) with the blood vessels of the fetus.
