male reproductive system Flashcards
what are the components of the male reproductive system?
testes, excretory genital ducts, accessory glands, and penis
where does production of spermatozoa occur?
testes
what is production of spermatozoa defined as?
spermatogenesis. both mitosis and meiosis.
what makes up semen?
spermatozoa and secretions of accessory glands (seminal fluid)
what surrounds the testes?
dense CT capsule called tunica albuginea
what is the inner part of tunica albuginea called? what is it like?
tunica vasculosa, loose CT highly vascularized
thickenening of posterior side of tunica albuginea forms what?
mediastinum testis
Leydig cells secrete what?
testosterone
structure of seminiferous tubules?
linked by short straight tubule to rete testis. efferent ductules connect rete testis to epidiymis.
what is rete testis?
a labrynith of channels embedded in mediastinum testis
what type of cells cover basement membrane of seminiferous tubules?
myoid cells, flattened smooth muscle like cells
what do myoid cells do?
allow for weak contractions of tubule
what is germinal epithelium?
spermatogenic epithelium that lines each seminiferous tubule. specialized stratified epithelium.
what cells exist in germinal epithelium?
sertoli cells and spermatogenic cells
sertoli cells
form blood-testis barrier to prevent autoimmune attack, etc. produce androgen binding protein, PHAGOCYTIC CELL. releases NON MOTILE spermatozoa once mature.
what does androgen binding protein do?
concentrates testosterone
