final lecture endocrine Flashcards
what produces mineral corticoids?
zona glomerulosa in adrenal cortex
what is primary secretion of endocrine system?
aldosterone
function of aldosterone?
major regulator of sodium and potassium balance by increasing kidney absoprtion of sodium and secretion of potassium
where are herring bodies located?
in posterior pituitary, PARS NERVOSA
what hormones accumulate in axonal terminal dilations called herring bodies?
anti-diuretic hormone and oxytocin
ADH does what?
aka vasopressin. increases permeability of renal collecting ducts
oxytocin
stimulates contraction of mammary gland myoepithelial cells and uterine smooth muscle
what is the function of the infundibulum?
attaches pituitary gland to hypothalamus. contains neurosecretory axons eminating from hypothalamus.
where is infundibulum located?
posterior lobe of pituitary
where is hypothalamic-hypophyseal tract located and what does it do?
infundibulum of endocrine system, carries ADH and oxytocin
what produces calcitonin?
parafollicular cells in thyroid gland
what does calcitonin do?
lowers blood calcium by inhibiting osteoclast activity
types of parenchymal cells?
pinealocytes and interstitial glial cells
what do pinealocytes produce?
melatonin
what do interstital glial cells produce?
light receptor stimulates melatonin release
what is corpora arenacea and where is it located?
brain sand, pineal gland
where is pineal gland located?
posterior wall of 3rd ventricle
what produces parathyroid hormone?
principal cells, epithelial cells.
what does PTH target?
osteoblasts, kindey, small intestine
what does PTH do?
increase blood calcium
what are catecholamines?
a chemical class of hormones secreted in adrenal cortex by chromaffin cells. noepinherphrine and epinhephrine
function of epinephrine and noepinephrine?
regulate stress response and stimulate glycogen breakdown
acidophils?
type of chromafil in pars distalis or anterior pituitary. produce and secrete GH and prolactin
