Male Reproductive System Flashcards
Purpose of Male Reproductive System
Generate Male gametes (sperm) and deliver them to female Reproductive System
Components of Male Reproductive System
- Penis
- Vas Deferens
- Urethra
- Prostate
- Seminal Vesicles
- Testes
- Scrotum
Primary Male Reproductive Organ
Testes
Sperm
Male gametes
Penis
Organ for elimination of urine and sperm
MALE COMPULATORY ORGAN
Vas deferens
The duct where sperm moves from a testicle to the urethra
Urethra
The duct that delivers urine from the urinary bladder to the outside of body
Prostate
Gland in male that controls the release of urine and secretes a portion of semen that enhances motility and fertility of sperm
Testes (testicles)
- Male gonads
- Organ that produces sperm through many seminiferous tubules
- Decend to scrotum from abdominal cavity
Scrotum
Sac that houses the testes outside of the body
Keeps the testes 3 degrees colder than normal body temperature for proper mature sperm production
Prostate & Seminal Vesicles
Produce fluids necessary for lubricating and nourishing sperm.
Vas deferens, Urethra & Penis
Form conduit through which sperm is ejaculated
VAS DEFERENS lead to URETHRA which leads SPERM outside of the body through the PENIS
Penis Anatomy Structure
- Smooth Muscle cells
- Enlarged tip surrounded by loose skin (foreskin)
- Opens as external urethral orifice
Penis Arousal
- Smooth muscle cells relax
- Blood flows into vascular spaces
- Corpora cavernosa distend
- Veins compress & Blood doesn’t drain
- Erection
Tunica Albuginea
Fibrous layer that covers the outside of the testes
Scrotal Raphe
Division in middle of scrotum that separates the testes into 2 chambers
Sperm Structure
Acrosome- Enzymes to penetrate oocyte (female gamete)
Neck- mitochondria for energy
Tail- helps sperm swim
Ejaculation
Mature sperms exit through tail of epidymis through vas deferens, ejaculated ducts, prostate Gland & empty into urethra
Accessory glands secrete fluids into urethra
Semen= final fluid from urethra
During ejaculation bladder sphincter contracts to prevent urine from mixing with semen
Puberty in Men
- Muscle mass increases
- Epiphyseal plates close
- Penis & Seminal vesicles grow
- Thicker vocal cords - deep voice
- Male hair growth
Dihydrotestoserone (DHT)
Produced from testosterone by 5 alpha-reductase in target tissues
Dihydrotestosterone determines
- Fetal maturity of external Male genitalia (penis, scrotum, prostate)
- Hair distribution (baldness)
- Sebaceous Gland activity
