Male Reproductive System Flashcards

1
Q

Scrotum

A

Ruggated, skin-covered, muscular pouch suspended from the perineum. It supports the testes.
- Its important function is it regulates the temperature of the sperm– necessary for the life of the sperm. Namamatay ang sperm due to a sudden change in temperature. If the male is feeling cold, the testes contracts so that it moves close to the body. If the body is feeling hot, the scrotum relaxes so that it falls away from the body

Q

Testes

A

aside from being a gonad, it is also an endocrine gland. It produces two things: (1) sperm cells, and (2) hormones.
Note that left testes is slightly larger and lower than the right.
- When you palpate it, it should be firm, soft, and egg-shaped.
- Testes should be palpated upon birth to check its presence. If hindi naka descend, may cryptorchidism yung bata. (undescended testes; magkakaproblem sa
fertility yung bata in the future kung hindi agad magagamot).

Q

what happens to the penis when sexual excitement occurs?

A

With sexual excitement, blood flow to the penis increases and causes dilation of arteries which then contracts the ischiocavernosus muscle resulting in an erection.

Q

Epididymis

A

provides temporary storage for immature sperm and while sperm travels epididymis, they mature, gaining ability to swim

Q

Ductus Deferens

A

Propel live sperm during ejaculation from epididymis to urinary bladder, and enclosed along with blood vessels and nerves in a connective tissue called spermatic cord

Q

Seminal Vesicles

A

Found at the base of the bladder and joins ductus deferens which then produce seminal fluid which nourishes and activates sperm passing.

A

Encircles upper part of urethra and below urinary bladder which secretes milky fluid that plays a role in activating sperm

Q

Bulbourethral Glands

A

Inferior to prostate gland and produce thick, clear mucus which cleanses urethra of acidic urine and serves as lubricant during sexual intercourse.

16
Q

what happens if the urethra is acidic and may dadaan na sperm?

A

mamatay ang sperm. Pero dahil may bulbourethral glands, nililinis nito and pathway para mabawasan yung acidic urine at nagiging healthy at hindi namamatay yung sperm na dumadaan with the semen.

17
Q

Semen

A

Milky white, sticky mixture of sperm and accessory structure secretions. In one ejaculate, there is approximately 2 to 5 ml of semen and there’s about 50 to 100 million sperms in each ml.

18
Q

Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)

A

Spermatogenesis, from the anterior pituitary gland; reproduction of sperm that starts from puberty and continues in time.

19
Q

Luteinizing Hormone (LH)

A

Testosterone production, from the anterior pituitary gland; production of androgen that is responsible for the secondary sex characteristics.

20
Q

SPERMATOGENESIS

A

Production of sperm begins during puberty when the anterior pituitary gland secretes follicle-stimulating hormone and continues throughout life.

21
Q

TESTOSTERONE PRODUCTION

A

Testosterone are produced by interstitial cells and responsible for secondary sex characteristics which begins during puberty, but this time, stimulated by luteinizing hormone secretion of anterior pituitary gland.
