Male reproductive physiology Flashcards
when does puberty start
9-14 years
whats abnormally early puberty
precocious puberty
whats delayed puberty
eunuchoidism
functions of the male reproductive system
to produce viable sperm
deliver sperm to female
what do parasympathetic impulses cause during erection
vasodilation of penile arteries
compression of veins by arteries
filling of erectile tissue with blood
what do sympathetic impulses do during erection
inhibit or end an erection
regulation of spermatogenesis and hormone secretion
- hypothalamus secretes GnRH
- FSH stimulates sertoli cells
- LH stimulates interstitial cells to produce testosterone
- FSH and testosterone cause spermatogenesis
- testosterone and inhibin feedback to anterior pituitary and hypothalamus to turn down FSH and LH production
- this slows spermatogenesis and testosterone secretion
spermatogenesis 3 phases
- spermatogonial phase - spermatogonia proliferate by mitotic division
- spermatocyte phase - diploid cells created in spermatogonial phase give rise to haploid cells via meiosis
- spermatid phase - spermatids differentiate into spermatozoa
what does FSH do in males
stimulates production of sperm (spermatogenesis) in conjunction with testosterone by regulating sertoli cells
what does LH do in males
stimulates testosterone production by leydig cells
